Parents don't have to understand

And sometimes it’s better that way.

During dinner one night, our daughter tromps over to the counter, picks up her gingerbread house and brings it to the table.

As she climbs into her chair she proceeds to tell us to “be very careful, there are smarties inside” and then proceeds to lift the house up to look inside the door as smarties cascade out, onto the table, down the chair and onto the floor.

Gathering all the smarties about her, she drops them in her drink cup one by one, explaining that this is how Opa makes his drinks.

When finished she tells us that some of the smarties plastered on the gingerbread house are nice but others are not and then stuffs the cutout Hänsel & Gretel witch into the door.

The witch doesn’t fit, with head and shoulders stuck inside, her legs bounce in the free wind outside.

Stella looks up with a sheepish grin, “she ate too many smarties”

The smarties are plastered to the gingerbread house with tough frosting. What’s stronger than little fingers that can’t pry the them off?

Her teeth of course and she attacks the house, removing those unsightly smarties.

As we’re readying to head upstairs to bed, she drains her cup and devours the half dissolved, nasty looking smarties. The she hands the cup to mommy and tells her that she can drink now too.

After mommy politely refuses the repulsive mix, Stella eagerly finishes the potion and we head up stairs to bed.

Honestly, I don’t want to know and it’s probably better so.
