Music Appreciation part II

Last weekend we attended the Klosterfest in Rehna. We saw a memorizing band called satolstelamanderfanz (don’t worry I can’t pronounce it either).

You can’t classify them. They are not only medieval, not just folk; they characterize themselves as nomads exploring the world and sharing and learning music as they go.

All members are multi talented, playing an amazing array of instruments such as a funny drum contraption, bag pipes from Scotland, Germany and Spain, the Neckelharba (keyed fiddle) and many other wonderful instruments. Their song repertoire ranges from Gaelic, Germany, Spain, Turkey and wherever else they have traveled.

To say they were spellbinding would be an understatement.

Someone else thought they were pretty cool too. Stella watched in amazement as they put on their show. Afterwards we bought one of their CD’s, which we promptly put in the CD player on the ride home and then promptly in the CD player at home.

  1. When the CD ended, someone hit play again, and again, and again.
  2. Monday we had a meet the teacher night at the kindergarten where Stella will start in August. Among many things they told us about the Music classes that are offered (it’s extra).
  3. When I asked Stella if she wanted to take the music classes she said “yes but only this [satolstelamanderfanz type] music.
  4. For the past three days Stella has insisted on taking the CD to daycare and there they had to hear the CD over and over and over.
  5. This morning, Stella told mommy that she wanted wear bells like the “lady with the drum” did. Mommy quickly pulled out our instruments and found the bells that Stella put around her foot so she could jingle as she walked and danced.

I hope the enthusiasm continues and we’ll go see them when they play at the Christmas market in Lübeck this winter.

If you are interested, check out their myspace page or their home page.

Change of Tune

If you remember from last year...try as we might we couldn’t get Stella into the “big water”.

This afternoon we decided to have a picnic on the Baltic Sea.

Before we could even unpack our blanket Stella pulled off her pants and ran towards the water.

It’s nice to know we’ll be able to go to the sea more often this year.
